The insurance landscape is changing in California for children with autism. With the recent passage of SB 946 and the current insurance settlement agreements, more parents are accessing insurance coverage for their children’s treatment for autism spectrum disorders.

What is AutismPro

For nearly a decade AutismPro, a product of Trumpet Behavioral Health, has been offering web-based professional development, teaching resources and effective strategies to help build capacity, improve competency, and support Special Education and General Education teachers in schools across the U.S. and Canada. AutismPro helps teachers, parents, and professionals that work with children on the autism spectrum and all children with behavior challenges that interfere with learning and teaching.

AutismPro is a convenient web-based, online software program in two products, Insights and Workshops:

• AutismPro Insights provides multiple members of the team (including parents) the platform and ability to collaborate while working with a student to build individual Positive Behavior Support Plans and vital Developmental Skills. It also offers powerful Data Collection and Tracking tools to save time. Beginning with identifying specific behaviors, the online software will compose replacement, proactive, and reactive strategies and activities for school and home application. The plans and reports generated augment IEPs and facilitate communication regarding the student’s progress while accurately and quickly identifying behavior patterns and successful strategies. Insights is a user-friendly tool that the teaching team can use to generate:
• Positive Behavior Support Plans: proactive, reactive, and replacement strategies and activities.
• Mini-Functional Behavior Assessments.
• Skills Acquisition Plans.
• Graphs, charts and progress reports to demonstrate progress over time and facilitate communication and direction for IEP Team meetings.

• AutismPro Workshops is 40 hours of online Professional development that:
• Creates consistency and competency among all staff.
• Supports schools in meeting state compliance and due process requirements.
• Provides 7 courses and 36 workshops can be used to build custom-tailored competency plans for specific staff and positions.  New content emphasizes inclusion, evidence-based classroom interventions for the general educator and support staff.

Grant Recipients Will Receive:

• AutismPro Professional Development Workshops for up to 10 staff members of your choosing, and up to 10 parents.
• Access to all seven Courses and 36 Workshops.
• Training for Program Administrators/Special Education Directors and support staff to implement AutismPro’s Professional Development tools and Learning Management System. Training will cover creation and management of staff competency plans.
• AutismPro Insights Case Management Resources and Reporting Tools for up to 10 students.
• Training for Special Education Directors, Special Education Teachers, and Support Staff on how to implement and use AutismPro Insights in the classroom.

Grant Recipient Requirements

Schools receiving AutismPro’s Colorado AIM Grants will be required to:

• Collaborate with AutismPro’s Implementation and Training Teams to help ensure successful roll-out of services.
• Participate in quarterly usage meetings to review progress, trouble shoot issues, and receive additional training.
• Provide quarterly survey responses to assist AutismPro in product development and research.
• Ensure appropriate school staff use the data collection tools to measure student progress over time and for use by the teaching team as needed for the individual reporting periods throughout the school year.

A successful application will require you and your school to provide detailed information about your Special Education program for students with autism or challenging behaviors related to other developmental delays or special needs.

Important Funding Changes

• California Regional Centers are starting to require consumers to demonstrate that they cannot obtain funding for those same services through their commercial health insurance provider.
• Several California Health Insurers recently signed settlement agreements with the Department of Managed Care, agreeing to provide behavioral therapies for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs).
• The new California Autism Insurance Mandate takes effect on July 1, 2012, further defining the responsibilities of all health insurers. This will allow many families who have commercial insurance coverage to have access to mandated behavioral health services for autism.

With these changes, local Regional Centers are requiring all families to contact their health insurance company to find out what types of autism intervention services they cover – or if they cover treatment based on their family’s policy.

Research has shown that early “intensive” intervention can lead to greater gains when treating children with Autism. Our early intervention program consists of individualized programming that focuses on communication, socialization, skill acquisition and behavior management. Center-based programming is available for children ranging in age from 18-months to 5 years and consists of 1:1 intensive individualized behavioral teaching focusing on language and skill acquisition as well as behavior management. A portion of the program includes integration into a local preschool on-campus. Space is limited!

Who: Children ages 18 months to 5 years with autism spectrum disorder or related behavioral disorders.

Ratio: 1:1

When: Continuous enrollment, 12-month program.

Full-day: M-F, 8:30am-3pm. Half-day is either 8:30-11:30am or 12-3pm.

Costs: Full-time monthly tuition $2,917. Half-day monthly tuition $1,750.

This program is designed for children/adolescents experiencing behavioral problems. The summer intensive behavioral program is designed to reduce/eliminate challenging behaviors effecting your child’s potential for success at home/school. This program will start with a functional behavior assessment utilizing a variety of techniques and strategies to identify the purposes of specific behavior and to help the team select interventions to directly address the problem behavior. A behavior plan will then be implemented with the child and data will be taken. During the last week of the program, parents/caregivers will be invited to get training on behavior plan implementation and data collection.

Who: Children ages 6-16 yrs old with autism spectrum disorder or related behavioral disorders.

Ratio: 1:1

When: M-F, June 4th-August 3rd; 3-5pm (there will be a 4th of July holiday break)

Costs: Approximately $700 initial assessment and consultation, $60/hour of therapy thereafter, total # hours of weekly therapy to be determined by initial consultation.

Insurance for Autism Treatment: Trumpet Behavioral Health  accepts most insurance plans for these services.

Children with special needs can learn and have fun at the same time during these exciting day-camp programs!

Activities are designed to coordinate with campers’ developmental needs. In addition to recreational activities and field trips, we build social, communication and academic skills by utilizing the principles of applied behavior analysis. This unique therapeutic/recreational environment may include teaching daily living skills, communication development, academics, sports groups/games, arts/crafts, and much more. Each week has a different theme to keep programs fresh and exciting. Siblings are welcome too, and will be provided the same exciting activities as research has shown that programs that include integration with typical peers promote optimal success in language and learning.

Who: Children ages 6-14 yrs old with autism spectrum disorder or related behavioral disorders and their siblings. Children will be grouped according to age.

Ratio: 1:3

When: M-F, June 4th-August 3rd; 9am-3pm (there will be a 4th of July holiday break)

Costs: $499/week or $3,000 for the entire 7 weeks (a nearly 15% discount!). Siblings will receive a 10% discount off the weekly tuition.
