Developing Individualized Treatment Plans for Patients with Autism and Related Disorders
Research has shown that Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the best methodology for teaching appropriate communication, social, academic, and behavioral skills to children and adolescents on the autism spectrum. Five things that healthcare professionals should consider to ensure an optimal behavior intervention program for autism:
- The interventions must be based on assessments that explain why the child with autism uses certain problem behaviors (i.e., to obtain a tangible item or activity, to gain attention, to avoid or escape a situation, or because the behavior itself is reinforcing)
- Autism interventions should teach and reinforce appropriate social and communicative behaviors
- Intervention strategies should be consistent, reviewed frequently, and based on reliable and accurate data
- Environmental factors may impact children with autism and affect their behavior, just as they may impact anyone’s behavior. These factors may include divorce, a change in routine, military deployment, change in staff, natural disasters, etc.
- Frequent communication and collaboration is crucial between healthcare professionals, parents, caregivers, behavior specialists and educators. A communication log that shares data collected between all those involved in the program is vital for success.
