Trumpet Academy serves children in grades K – 12 that have challenging behaviors that interfere with learning.

At Trumpet Academy, our Board Certified Behavior Analysts provide highly structured, individualized educational programs that utilize evidence based teaching strategies to meet each student’s IEP goals and objectives.

Our programs, including all related services, place an emphasis on positive behavioral supports. We provide the individualized support necessary for students to successfully access standards-based educational opportunities. Our ultimate goal is for students to acquire the necessary social, behavioral and communicative skills needed to return to a less restrictive environment.

Dr. Michael Wright is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. He received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of California and received his Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Clinical Child Psychology from the University of Kansas.    He has received post doctoral training for the treatment of children and adults with developmental disorders and interventions specific to Autism Spectrum Disorders. He has also had training in cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy, intensive in-home family therapy and behavioral therapy to deal with issues of ADHD, Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, and Adjustment Disorders.

Dr. Wright completed his internship at the Child and Family Guidance Center in Northridge California and completed his Post Doctoral Training at Alakai Na Keiki in Honolulu, Hawaii.  He was the Honolulu District Supervisor and staff trainer at Alakai Na Keiki.  Dr. Wright joined Trumpet Behavioral Health in 2005 as a Consultant and has been the Director of Clinical Operation for Humboldt since 2010. Currently, he serves as the Regional Director for Southern California and Hawaii.  This region is comprised of areas North of Los Angeles, Los Angeles, and Orange County in California and the islands of Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island in Hawaii.

Over the past two decades Dr Wright’s focus has been on providing service to individuals on the Autism Spectrum and individuals diagnosed with conduct disorder through contracts with the Department of Education and Department of Health.  In his private practice he has focused on children with Adjustment Disorders, Depression, and ADHD.  He provides evidenced based treatments to the individuals and clients he serves.

It has been almost three decades, in three different states and Jessie Mitchell has yet to find a profession that is more interesting, challenging and enriching than her role as behavior analyst.  Jessie is a senior clinician with TBH, pet lover and enjoys being surrounded by nature.

Philosophy of Care

My personal mission is to strive for ethical and professional excellence in everything I do while carefully using behavior analysis to improve lives.  My professional activities are guided by the ethical guidelines set forth by Behavior Analyst Certification Board and a personal commitment towards Civility.  I value helping new professionals grow as behavioral analysts and helping consumers with behavioral and learning challenges grow as members of society.  I take a functional, problem-solving approach to helping individuals develop new skills and new and appropriate ways to interact with their environment. My personal motto is that no challenge is to great and nothing is impossible, especially when the challenge is tackled by a team. In all things, I strive to think objectively and to make decisions that are guided by data and evidence rather than just opinion.

Cheryl is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with over 10 years of experience working with individuals with developmental delays in Hawaii.  She received her B.A. in Social Studies Secondary Education at the University of Northern Colorado and has held a teaching license in the state of Colorado, where she taught classes in Psychology and U.S. History.  Cheryl went on to receive her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Reading from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  Upon returning to Hawaii, Cheryl found her passion by combining her love of teaching with the use of Applied Behavior Analysis to positively impact the lives of children and their families.  She has worked with consumers ranging in age from toddlers through adults, and under a variety of contracts with the Department of Education, Department of Health, and TriCare.

Philosophy of Care

My passion lies in teaching clients how to learn.  I enjoy empowering families to help themselves.  The greatest reward is seeing a child doing something for him/herself for the first time.  I got into this field because while I enjoyed teaching American History to high school students, the work I do with children with autism is more meaningful and has a direct impact on improving the quality of lives


We offer 1:1 intensive individualized behavioral teaching.

Our evidence-based treatment will help children acquire communication and behavioral skills that can lead to a decrease in destructive, disruptive, and unsafe behaviors.

Students will learn alternative prosocial and productive behaviors. We will help to improve student’s skills in the areas of interpersonal communication, problem-solving, academic, leisure, self-help skills, and integration into the community.

We also offer a variety of other School-Based Behavioral Health Services, including BISS, Paraprofessional, Parent Training, Functional Behavior Analysis (FBA) and Group Therapy.
